Aware Parenting is an intuitive and beautiful approach to parenting that focuses on three core tenets.

These are:

  • Attachment style parenting

  • Non-punitive discipline

  • Healing from stress and trauma

Aware Parenting is based on the work of Aletha Solter, Ph.D., a Swiss American developmental psychologist, that invites parents to focus on presence, connection and curiosity with their children. The Aware Parenting approach is supported by research in the fields of attachment, child development, neurobiology, trauma, psychotherapy, and education.

This approach encourages parents to attune to the physical and emotional needs of their children, in order to respond to different behaviours that are emerging. It is a democractic approach to parenting, that seeks to move away from the idea of children "misbehaving", and instead recognise that a child's natural state is one of cooperation, connection and care. When children are out of balance, and displaying behaviours that we may find challenging, it is telling us that there may be some painful feelings underneath. Through attachment play and holding space for children's feelings, children can continue to feel connected to their parents and be able to move through the painful feelings that they may be experiencing.

This session can happen during pregnancy (or pre-conception) if you are planning to incorporate Aware Parenting during pregnancy or from birth. Breastfeeding support with an Aware Parenting lens can also be offered.

Packages are available if there are ongoing topics you would like to focus on.

My Journey with Aware Parenting

I first came across the book The Aware Baby in 2010. It wasn't until I birthed my first child in hat I started to explore different parenting approaches to see what would be a good fit for me. In 2020 I was parenting a toddler who had a lot of aggression, and I revisited Aware Parenting thanks to the Aware Parenting podcast with Marion Rose. It was such an AHA moment to realise that I had been offering my son the breast at any given opportunity, and this was likely contributing to a lot of feelings that were bubbling away, without the only ways to be released through aggressive outbursts.

Deepening my understanding and knowledge of the principles of Aware Parenting has given me an emotional intimacy with my children that I had never imagined was possible. Being a midwife, I felt confident in holding space for people as they move through uncomfortable feelings, physically and emotionally. Aware Parenting has built on this foundation in such a profound way. This approach to parenting has gifted me with being able to truly welcome the uncomfortable feelings, and hold space for them lovingly, knowing that once the feelings have been released there will be a sense of spaciousness and purity.

Learning to hold space for my children's feelings has expanded my capacity for presence, compassion and reflection with myself, my community and the families I support. I feel that parenting can often surface feelings of harsh judgment, criticism and inadequacy. Aware Parenting can feel so reparative as it offers such love and compassion, while gently encouraging self reflection and self awareness. It has been a balm for me during my parenting journey and I am forever grateful.
